Hurts MVP, Jalen Hurts, NFL Season

Jalen Hurts Uncertain Status

Jalen Hurts put on a show with his feet on Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles moved to 13-1 with a win over the Chicago Bears. The win, however, could have come at a cost, with the news that all-world quarterback Jalen Hurts injured his throwing shoulder during the win. This puts Hurts in doubt for the crunch divisional matchup against the 10-4 Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, a game that the NFL has been promoting for weeks as one of the biggest left on its calendar as a Christmas Ever showdown between two major market teams in the most competitive division in football.

Jalen Hurts Injury Worry

It says so much about Hurts that he wasn’t only able to play through the injury on Sunday, but he was also able to lead the Eagles to another win. The working theory is that Hurts injured his shoulder on a third-quarter play where he was hit by Bears defensive end Trevis Gipson. Hurts scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter – his third rushing touchdown of the game – and the grit and determination that it took for Hurts to keep playing is yet another reason that his name should be front and center in the MVP discussion.

His passing accuracy was noticeably off on Sunday. At the time, the Eagles did a good job of keeping his injury under the radar, but with the Cowboys up next, it looks like backup Gardner Minshew might get the start. It would be silly to risk Hurts with the playoffs so close, especially with the Dallas Cowboys losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, giving the Eagles a little more breathing room, meaning they need just one more win – or one more Dallas loss – to clinch the East.

The Eagles need Hurts healthy to make the type of playoff run expected of a team with just one loss after 14 games of the season. His dynamic play keeps defenses completely off balance, and it is hard to see how the offense will run the same way under the less athletic Minshew. Rehabbing Hurts needs to be priority number one for the Eagles over the rest of the regular season. Their postseason future depends on it.
