Stop It Jalen Hurts

Sometimes there are football games and feats that verge on the ridiculous. That was the case on Sunday Night Football this weekend in a game where the whole country got to see exactly what Jalen Hurts can do on a football field live and in primetime.

The 40-33 win by the Eagles sounds closer than it was when you look at the score. Here is a look at just how ridiculous Hurts was as a dual-threat on Sunday.

Jalen Hurts Takes Over

We have seen Hurts take over games before, but this was special even for the former Alabama quarterback. He was a balanced offense all on his own, finishing the game with 158 yards rushing and 153 yards passing. He threw for a pair of touchdowns and no picks, and Hurts took over the game.

The Eagles have a long history of quarterbacks that have run the ball effectively. Even so, Hurts set a new Eagles record for rushing yards by a quarterback here, breaking a record that Mick Vick had held since a 2020 game against the New York Giants. With those 158 yards rushing, Hurts also posted the fourth-highest rushing total ever by a quarterback in an NFL regular season game.

Hurts’ biggest history maker in the contest was his first-half performance. He became the first player in the HISTORY OF THE NEL to pass and run for at least 125 yards in the same half of a game. It was an epic performance that was even more impressive because most of those big runs came on off-schedule scramble yard. Those are the plays that destroy a defense, ones that change their whole mentality and make them slower to react, something that Hurts has been providing for the Eagles in spades all season long.

Setting Records

The single-game record is impressive, but Hurts is doing legacy things too. The pilot of the 10-1 Eagles – the best record in the league at this point- has 6,500 passing and 1,500 rushing yards through his first 30 starts in the league. No one – not Vick, Lamar Jackson, or Steve Young – has even done that.

Watching Hurts on the sideline tells a story of why he is successful. The great quarterbacks are in constant dialog with their head coach and offensive coordinator, relaying what they see on the field and what they think a defense will be weak against. Hurts has that innate feel to make those calls based on what he sees and get it right. This elevates him as an MVP candidate as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, as the game is coming to him so slowly at present.

Always remember folks to bleed Eagles’ green, and Fly Hurts Fly!
